📁 Groups & Categories Guide
Groups help you categorize and organize your spending. Set budgets for each category and track where your money goes.
What are Groups?
Groups are categories for your transactions. Each group has a name, emoji, type (income/expense), and optional budget amount.
📤 Expense Groups
Categories for money you spend
- 🍔 Food & Groceries
- 🏠 Housing & Utilities
- 🚗 Transportation
- 🎥 Entertainment
- 👕 Clothing
📥 Income Groups
Categories for money you receive
- 📜 Salary
- 💼 Freelance
- 🎁 Gifts
- 💰 Investments
- 🏦 Other Income
Creating Groups
- Go to Planning page
- Scroll to the bottom of the expense or income section
- Click the emoji square to pick an emoji (optional)
- Type the name into the "Group name" field
- Click the "+" button
- Open the new group afterwards to give it a budget
Setting Budgets
For expense groups, set a budget to limit spending in that category:
Budget Calculation:
Hooldbudget uses the higher of:
- Budget amount you set
- Actual spending in that group
This ensures your calculations reflect reality, not just plans.
Organizing Groups
Keep your groups organized:
- Reorder: Drag the handle on the left to change order
- Rename: Click the group row, then edit the "Group name" field and Save
- Change emoji: Click the emoji square in the opened row
- Log straight into it: "Log transaction to here" opens the form with the group pre-selected
- Delete: The bin icon removes the group and every transaction in it
Copying Groups to Future Periods
When you create a new period, groups are automatically copied from the previous one. From an opened group row you can also:
- Copy group to next period: Push this one group forward on its own
- Sync budget to future: Apply this group's budget to every later period
- Sync name to future: Rename this group in every later period at once
If a period ended up with no groups at all, "Copy groups from previous period" on the Planning page brings the whole set across.
Best Practices
- ✓ Start simple: Begin with 5-7 groups, add more as needed
- ✓ Be specific: "Groceries" and "Restaurants" instead of just "Food"
- ✓ Use emojis: Quick visual identification
- ✓ Set realistic budgets: Based on past spending, not wishes
Organize Your Budget
Create custom groups and start tracking your spending by category.
